Spring cleaning checklist for Reno homes
A room-by-room plan for clearing out winter and getting the house ready for open windows.
Start with a plan
Spring cleaning feels overwhelming when you try to do the whole house at once. It goes faster as a series of small, finished rooms. Pick an order, work top to bottom in each room, and finish one before starting the next.
One tip before you begin: declutter first. Every item you get rid of is one less thing to dust around.
Whole house
- Replace the furnace or HVAC filter after a winter of closed windows.
- Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures before the fans go back on.
- Clean window sills and tracks, which collect winter dust and grit.
- Wipe baseboards, door frames and doors.
- Wash or vacuum curtains and blinds.
- Wipe light switches and door handles.
Entryways
- Deep clean the floors at every entrance, where winter grit and mud got tracked in.
- Shake out or wash door mats.
- Clear out the coats, boots and gloves that won't be needed until next winter.
Kitchen
- Empty and wipe out the fridge, and check dates on everything.
- Clean inside the oven and microwave.
- Degrease cabinet fronts, handles and the range hood.
- Clear and wipe the pantry shelves. Our pantry and cupboard guide helps here.
Bathrooms
- Scrub shower glass and tile. For white spots, see removing hard water spots.
- Clean the exhaust fan cover.
- Clear out expired products from drawers and cabinets.
- Wash the shower curtain and bath mats.
Bedrooms and closets
- Swap winter bedding for lighter layers, and wash what you put away.
- Vacuum under the bed and furniture.
- Go through closets and set aside clothes that weren't worn all winter.
Outside the door
- Sweep the porch and patio.
- Wipe down patio furniture before the first warm evening.
Hand off the heavy parts
A spring reset is exactly what a deep clean is for. A deep clean from Tracy's Tidy Homes covers everything in a standard clean, plus baseboards, door frames, inside the microwave and detailed bathroom scrubbing. If the clutter needs sorting too, Tracy also offers decluttering and organizing. She sees each home before giving a price. Request an estimate.
